American President Lines Ltd. (APL), along with its parent company CMA-CGM Group, belongs to world’s third-largest container transportation and shipping group. APL provides comprehensive global container shipping services to over 50 destinations via our global network. APL Lanka established itself in 1991 and has an extensive coverage of Sri Lanka with an office in Colombo. APL Lanka also provides market representation for the Maldives. Today, APL is one of the biggest names in container shipping in Sri Lanka and plays a vital role in supporting global trade & commerce in the country. APL will join the league of the world’s largest container shipping lines in the OCEAN Alliance effective 1st April 2017. As one of the five main carriers of the Alliance, APL is set to bring customers unparalleled coverage extending across all major East-West trade in the world.
APL was originally registered as Lanka Trident Shipping Agencies (Private) Limited on the 14th of May, 1992, which was later changed to NOL Lanka (Private) Limited on the 20th of December, 1995. Our journey began on the 12th of November, 1997 when NOL-Singapore had acquired American President Lines. Not long after, APL Lanka (Private) Limited was established as a joint venture with 60% stake of Sri Lankan Origin – Mr. I. W. Senanayake who held 60% and the balance 40% held by APL Company (Pte) Ltd (Singapore). This 40% foreign shareholding was bought over by Mr. I. W. Senanayake on the 6th of November, 2015. He is now the sole shareholder of APL Lanka and this transaction is known to be the largest purchase of a foreign principal by a Sri Lankan individual.
